Corps members were once told their NYSC allowance would be increased if the Federal Government increases minimum wage.

Following the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) suspended strike over minimum wage, Twitter Nigeria has revisited the NYSC corps members allowance with #NyscAllowance.

Corps members across the country are currently earning N19,800 as monthly allowance for their service.

But recently, there were rumours that the Federal Government was planning to increase the allowance to N48,900.

The rumour was based on the statement the NYSC Director-General,  Brig. Gen. Suleiman Kazaure made while addressing corps members on Thursday, August 2, 2018.

The DG said  “the federal government is working to increase your monthly allowance, therefore, wherever you find yourselves conduct yourself well, be a good ambassador of your family, the scheme and the nation.

“We received a letter from the presidency, that is, Ministry of Youth and Sport copied the Ministry of Finance that shows that the corps allowance will be reviewed upward, it is in the pipeline''

Six days after Kazaure's announcement, a twitter handle, APC Newspaper, which claims to be a social media mouthpiece for the ruling party, All Progressive Congress announced that President Muhammdu Buhari has raised NYSC allowance to N49,800.

However, when Pulse Community reporter, Bayo Wahab tweeted at the NYSC to confirm the authenticity of the claim NYSC replied saying ''it is a rumour''.

The Minister of Labour, Sen. Chris Ngige also came out to deny the claims about NYSC allowance increase.

Ngige said that the Federal Executive Council has not received any recommendation to that effect.

Meanwhile, it was argued that the NYSC allowance cannot be increased if the minimum wage is not increased.

According to Guardian, Kazaure in August reassured corps members of the upward review of their allowance, saying it would take effect with the new national minimum wage.

However, the suspended NLC strike is prompting the Federal Government to increase the minimum wage but nothing is being said about NYSC allowance increase.

Meanwhile, some corps members on Twitter are already clamouring for allowance increase as they explain how insufficient the N19,800 is for their upkeep.

Here are some of the tweets about #NyscAllowance.
