Students protest as UNILORIN increases tuition fee by ‘over 100%’
The University's student union president says the tuition increase cannot stand.
The management of the University of Ilorin has reportedly increased tuition fee by over 100 per cent.
The student union president, Seyi Anamasaun while confirming the tuition increase to Premium Time said the hike will not stand.
“What we have woken up to is rather unexpected, shocking and challenging. This cannot stand. I have called an emergency meeting with all SU executives and all Faculty presidents and we shall release a comprehensive report after,” he said.
Unlike other Federal Universities, the tuition increase in UNILORIN varies from one faculty to the other.
A student of the university, Munir Ambali, who spoke with Premium Times about the increase said the increase “depends on the amount each faculty has been paying before now”.
The university's Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun also confirmed the hike saying, “the increment is just marginal with the current economic reality and we are still below other universities,”
Meanwhile students have been reacting to the tuition increase on social media.
